With summer fun comes the painful sunburn and bug bites. While these are annoying and inconvenient, there are easy, natural solutions with items likely already in your home! We’ve curated a list of natural remedies for sunburn and bug bites to ease your pain.
Apple Cider Vinegar
There are a couple ways to use apple cider vinegar to soothe sunburn. You can either spray it on the burned area with a spray bottle, or soak cotton balls in the vinegar and apply to burned skin. Wellness Mama also has an apple cider vinegar and herbs spray to ease sunburn that she swears by!
I mean, is there anything coconut oil can’t do? Try lathering on some coconut oil post-sunburn to reduce the redness and stop peeling. You’ll smell lovely, too. 🙂
Hydration is Key
Drinking plenty of water should always be a priority, but even more so when you get burnt. Sunburn dries your skin out, so drinking plenty of water is important in the recovery process! Herbal teas and kombucha can help hydrate you as well.
This kitchen staple is widely used in DIY remedies, bug bites included! You can make a simple paste by combining 1 tablespoon baking soda with a splash of water to create a paste, apply for 10 minutes, and rinse!
This trick is a little less obvious, but studies have shown that basil has itch-relieving properties. You can simply rub a fresh basil leaf on the bite, or make a basil rub by boiling 2 cups of water with 1/2 ounce dried basil leaves.
The cooling properties of peppermint temporarily stimulate nerves to relieve pain and itching. There are a few ways to use peppermint to soothe bug bites. You can apply a drop of peppermint essential oil, rub a fresh peppermint leaf on the bite, or even apply a dab of natural toothpaste!
